Suffolk Rams

The Midhope flock of Suffolk Sheep was formed in 1982 with ewes derived from T Tomlinsons Lightash flock. The aim then and now is to produce ram lambs and shearling rams which when used in commercial flocks produce lambs which are easy fleshing and of good confirmation. These rams are generally sold at Bakewell,Skipton, Kelso livestock markets and privately at home. The use of Signet recording and (since joining Premier Suffolk Breeders - formerly Suffolk Sire Reference Scheme) AI has meant that we have been able to use sires to both improve the EBV'S for growth rate and carcass quality and at the same time improving confirmation and breed character. In 2005 a ram lamb was selected for use within the Premier Suffolk Breeders Scheme and this sire, together with the following proven sires were used for the 2008 lambing crop: Tomcroft Original EBV 3.86 Midhope Supersire 05 EBV 3.58 Muiresk Adrenalin EBV 2.92 Castlewellan Nutcracker EBV 2.38 Cragroe Craftsman EBV 1.34 These sires were chosen for their length, superb confirmation and growth rate.Their lambs have followed through, being very fleshy with great length. Due to the FMD outbreak in 2007 followed closely by the Blue Tongue, the market was very unpredictable. We decided to grow on our best ram lambs to shearlings. We are very pleased with how they have grown out.
